VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Metro Vancouver landfills will be met will over 100,000 metric tonnes of shriveled and sad looking pumpkins come November. So, what else can you do with the vegetable other than tossing him in the trash?
Metro Vancouver says keeping those gourds out of the garbage can eliminate about 500 tonnes of carbon dioxide. It says the alternative is composting because once worms get to work it can provide nutrient-rich compost that you can use to grow next year’s pumpkin.
Dropping shredded pumpkin chunks in your veggie or flower garden creates a natural fertilizer. Simply dig a shallow trench, chop up the pumpkin and chuck him around. And if your creation holds up, you could even make a delightful pumpkin pie.
And if none of those options are appealing to you many municipalities will adopt your pumpkin as part of their Yard Waste Collection Program after Halloween, but the rules depend on where you live.
